Our Breeds: Jerseys and Holsteins
We have chosen to raise Jerseys and Holsteins here at Benson Shady Valley Farm. These breeds are known for their excellent milk production and gentle nature, making them a perfect fit for our grass-fed dairy operation.
A Day in the Life of Our Cows
Our cows start their day off at 6 am, either being brought to the barn from the pasture or being awakened by the barn lights being turned on.
Once they are up they are brought to the milking stalls to be milked. Milking only takes 10-15 minutes and they are then able to go to their laying stalls or back to the pasture, where they can eat and drink all day until 5 pm.
At night we repeat the morning process exactly. Routine is very important to cows.
Special Care for Healthy Cows
At Benson Shady Valley Farm, our cows are like pets! They love to be petted, allowing us to inspect them closely every day. They have constant access to a mineral tub and receive vaccinations before calving to ensure they're in the best shape to recover quickly. We also work with a very good vet who provides herd health services as needed.
