Our Breeds: Jerseys and Holsteins
We have chosen to raise Jerseys and Holsteins here at Benson Shady Valley Farm. These breeds are known for their excellent milk production and gentle nature, making them a perfect fit for our grass-fed dairy operation.
A Day in the Life of Our Cows
From May through November, our cows enjoy the freedom of pasture grazing. They also have access to round bales of grass hay. They can freely roam to and from the barn for shade and shelter. We have remodeled our old tie stall barn to allow the cows to come in for milking and then leave or stay if they choose.
Special Care for Healthy Cows
At Benson Shady Valley Farm, our cows are like pets! They love to be petted, allowing us to inspect them closely every day. They have constant access to a mineral tub and receive vaccinations before calving to ensure they're in the best shape to recover quickly. We also work with a very good vet who provides herd health services as needed.
The Benefits of Grass-Fed Milk
Cows fed a grass diet are proven to be healthier, and their milk has a distinctive, delicious taste. Think of a light cream, like ice cream at the bottom of the bowl. It also has a better shelf life! Grass-fed milk benefits both the cows and the consumers.
