Welcome to Benson Shady Valley Farm
At Benson Shady Valley Farm, we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality grass fed milk on our dairy farm in Powers,Michigan. We are 30 minutes from Escanaba, 40 minutes from Menominee, and 35 minutes from Iron Mountain.
We have been in Powers since 1947 and have been a closed herd (we don't buy animals and bring them to our farm) for almost as long. Our herd is mostly Jerseys that are A2A2 along with a few Holsteins. All of our cows are disease tested and we do weekly bacteria and coliform tests on the milk to ensure it is safe. Our milk is not pasteurized or homogenized.

We are all about flexibility! We offer the option to skip when you will be on vacation/ out of town. All we ask is that you contact us in advance to let us know when you need to skip.

fun fact- protein powder used to make muscle milk is just the cream from the top of raw milk that is skimmed off the top and dried to make it powder, which you then add back to milk which means you could just buy raw milk and not have to mix anything.

Raw milk is just one of the few products we have to offer. We also have milk soaps in a wide variety of scents. All soap is made with our milk and high quality essential oils.

Our story
I am Krystal Benson and my husband Allen and I purchased the farm in 2023. We purchased 30 cows and the machinery. We had already purchased the land and buildings in 2021. We have always wanted to be dairy farmers as that was the way we were raised and wanted to raise our kids the same. We both have off farm jobs and juggling the farm, work, and more importantly our family we decided that something had to change. At first we thought just selling cows after they calved and keeping the herd at 20 cows would be enough, but that turned out not to be the case. In June of 2025 we made the decision to stop shipping milk to Jilberts/ DFA and to sell the majority of the milking herd. From that time on it has slowly evolved into a herd share and we have made plans to be a grass fed beef and dairy operation. With our main focus being on sustainability for our kids to someday be able to farm as we have.
